Chinese Whispers

A process or conversation with multiple stages and people involved, where the original message changes as it becomes obscured and misconstrued.
Why it matters
Culturally insensitive phrase, associating the Chinese language with “confusion” and “incomprehensibility”. It also implies an inability to listen and understand messages.
Instead try saying:
Gossip
Rumour
Grapevine
Broken Telephone (U.S. version of the children's game)
