Sold Down The River
Used to signify profound betrayal for some personal profit or advantage.
Why it matters
The etymology comes from the 1800's when slave traders travelled the Mississippi river selling enslaved people to plantation owners further south. Being sold down the river meant a life of inhumane conditions and brutal labour. Using it as a simile may inadvertently diminish the weight of its etymology.
