Stakeholders

Stakeholders describe those who have an interest, or a stake, in something such as an issue or outcome.
Why it matters
Whilst a commonly used word, this term may have colonial associations and is increasingly dissuaded in colonised lands such as Australia, Canada and America where indigenous people are still impacted. Stakeholder has multiple etymologies deriving from “stake”, a stick or post sharpened for driving into the ground. Wagers were placed on a stake, hence "sweepstakes" or to "have a stake" in something. The links to colonialism refer to settlers using stakes to build fences and mark territory, laying claim to land or property which did not belong to them.
